RENO –– Moving forward with a clearer idea of what will be expected in terms of cuts needed to help Nevada’s budget crisis, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will meet today and regroup from the recent legislative special session.

The meeting will start at 2:30 p.m. with a closed executive session to discuss employment negotiations with district management groups.

The board will reconvene in a regular session at 4 p.m., during which they will hear updates on the special session’s impacts on the 2010-11 budget process. The Nevada Legislature approved 6.9 percent cuts to education, which is more forgiving than the originally anticipated 10 or 22 percent reductions. However, the figure still presents a harsh reality for staff and Superintendent Heath Morrison, who said certain cuts can no longer stay away from the classroom.

Board members will also hear an update on the district’s strategic plan, the comprehensive design document that will shape, through the use of data analysis, the future the trustees envision to help students become college- and career-ready. The update will present updates and delineate the next steps toward preparing an actual document for the plan.

The public meeting takes place at  4 p.m. in the board room of the district’s administration building at 425 E. Ninth St. in Reno.
