Reno police are targeting drivers who illegally park vehicles in handicapped spaces.

Police have issued 627 citations so far this year for the violation. Another 844 citations were issued last year.

The department relies on its Senior Auxiliary Volunteer Effort members to keep an eye on handicapped parking spaces in the city.

The SAVE volunteers check for valid handicapped parking permits or handicapped license plates.

A first-time handicapped parking violation carries a fine of $250.

SAVE volunteers must be at least 50 years old and receive special training from Reno police officers and qualified volunteers.
