Four years to the day after the crime was committed, the suspect in a 2004 shooting at a Sparks apartment complex was taken into custody.

On Thursday, U.S. Marshals arrested German Rios, 26, on a warrant for the homicide of Sparks resident Juan Martinez, 29. On the night of July 31, 2004, a man believed to be Rios shot and killed Martinez after a conversation outside the Spanish Oak Village Apartments at 1855 El Rancho Drive in Sparks. At the time of the shooting, Sparks Police reported that Martinez and the shooter had a verbal altercation through the driver’s side car window when the shooter started to drive away in a white Chevrolet Blazer.

The driver then made a u-turn, returned and shot Martinez once. Rescue crews attempted to revive Martinez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooter fled from the scene, but witnesses pointed the finger at Rios and police publicly named him as the suspect two days later.

Sparks detectives and U.S. Marshals developed information Rios was in the San Joaquin Valley, he was located at a construction site in Lodi, Calif. and taken into custody without incident. Rios was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail and is being held without bail.

Sparks Police detectives have notified the victim’s family and are currently in California interviewing Rios. Extradition is pending.
