The department this week announced Nevada was one of six states that will be dividing the $180 million in grant money.
Those six states will hold competitions of their own to award 95 percent of the funds as smaller grants to local school districts and early childhood educations organizations.
Grants are part of the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Program that seeks creative ways to teach reading to children through 12th grade. Thirty-five states applied for the funding.
