Sparks City Councilman John Mayer was named the Politician of the Year by the Human Services Network on Wednesday.
Mayer has served Ward 1 of the city since 1991.
Mayer has lived in Sparks all of his life. Besides serving on the city council, Mayer worked as a teacher and administrator for the Washoe County School District for more than 30 years.
The HSN award was given to Mayer at the group's annual awards breakfast. The Humanitarian of the Year award was also given during the breakfast.
Mayer was given the award based on his "demonstrated achievements in the community, government, and beyond," said city spokesman Adam Mayberry.
The mission of HSN is to support and maintain human service efforts in the Truckee Meadows, by working with legislators, commissioners, policy makers and council members and advocating for human services providers, clients and surrounding communities.
